You can tell they made this game with the long time fans in mind, those of us who grew up with the series from KH1 and waited for each subsequent release. The story was richer, deeper, and more mature. Most of the points listed above didn't hit me until after I finished the game and was really reflecting on it - but during the game I was completely absorbed and loving every second. There were some missed chances at meetings/reunions - something more than a glance between Roxas and Ventus was needed, Terra and Riku reconnecting would have been great, and not seeing the Roxas and Namine reunion was a let down after all the stressed importance of their connection.Īll that being said - I can understand that with a game as complex and detailed as this one, some things were bound to fall through the cracks. I will say the characters that got shafted were Kairi most importantly, then Roxas, and a little bit of Lea (only for his destroyed keyblade and lack of fighting) and Ventus (he got kicked around and looked sad and that's about it). The other trios had their hurts and tragedies addressed and apologized for - Ansem apologizing to the Sea Salt trio and Eraqus apologizing to the BBS trio. Riku comes to terms with and accepts his darkness and past mistakes Mickey isn't just a Deus Ex Machina and is fallible the Organization members embrace or lash out at their past mistakes - but both were very human responses, believable and relatable. You feel the emotional significance of them insisting they fight alongside Sora until the very end. They're no longer just two sidekicks who are there to sometimes heal you they actually feel like Sora's longtime friends and travel companions who have faced many battles together. However, that which I think can strongly be argued as nearly perfect was the story and resolution itself. While I personally think most of the game mechanics - fighting style, gummi travel, the story of the Disney world themselves and the over pacing of the game - was great, I realize that opinions on those just comes to down to differences in tastes between players. You can tell they really made sure they addressed (most) everything from lingering questions, to long awaited reunions, and perhaps most importantly some really great fleshing out of the overall world in the series and the characters themselves! If they hadn't spent so many years on this, it would have failed, terribly. Playing the game, it becomes quickly apparent that the creators are well aware of all these things, and it's no wonder it took 13 years to release. The series is infamous for its convoluted nature and the eternal wait for KH3. KH3 had the very difficult task of wrapping up and tying together many different plot points, characters, and story threads from many different games.
